Cetones: Signs, Symptoms And Tests

When your body burns the fat for producing energy, the components that are formed is together known as cetone. A person suffering from chronic diabetes, that is high blood sugar level and lack of insulin produced by the body leads to the formation of ketones. Glucose forms in the blood stream instead of entering in the body cell when your system fails to produce adequate amount of insulin. During such condition, your cells tend to burn the fat instead of the glucose. Thus forming ketones in the blood and spreads it in the urine.cétone

Some Regular Reasons of High Blood Sugar Level:

>A patient already suffering from high blood sugar and he/she misses the insulin dose or his oral medications.

>A human being suffers from lack of insulin production by the body due to many reason s but one common cause is due to the blockage in the insulin pump tube.

>Even down with flu in a regular basis also leads to the deficiency of insulin in the body

>Excessive level of stress and depression and frequent nervous break downs lead to insulin imbalance.

>Improper diets. Consuming more carbohydrates and fat items than your medicines can cover up for the patient who is already a diabetic.

Symptoms for Testing Ketones:

The first symptoms that you have to be careful about are of high blood sugar. As increase in blood sugar level leads to formation of traces of cetone, therefore the first step is to check your blood sugar at the very first stage. Some of these symptoms are frequent urine out, frequent thirst, hazy and weak eyesight, dry mouth, fatigue, vomiting tendency and lethargic feeling.

Indication for conducting a test for cetone:

How to Test cetones?

There are generally two ways to test whether ketone is present in your body or not. Either you have to test your blood or urine. Though testing your blood at first is the best way to detect the presence of cetones as ketones first appear in blood and then later are found in the urine.

For blood test- You need to go to the pathology centre and give your blood for the respective test for cetones. The results come out with the percentage present in your blood and the normal counts together. Then your doctor will treat you as per the need. At this point of time there is very few blood meters present in the market that detects ketones from your blood directly. You need to give few drops of fresh blood in the meter and after few seconds it shows the margin of cetones present in the screen attached to the machine.

For testing through urination- You need to collect the first urine sample in the morning and then dip the cetone test strips. After following the instructions properly you will see the changing color of the strip. The darker the color of the strip the higher is the amount of ketones present in the urine.

Final verdict

If you face any of these problems you should not delay to consult a doctor. If you are already a diabetic then you should avoid eating high calorie and carbohydrate foods, consuming plenty of water, having a regular check on your blood sugar level and never skip your insulin dose and medications.
